Emotional Literacy for Support Assistants Project

The ELSA project is commencing training for support staff in January 2009. The project sits alongside the (SAP) and is part of a tiered approach for supporting pupils with Emotional Behavioural Social Difficulties.

Bridgend has been chosen as one of the authorities in Wales, to develop counselling services to children at the foundation and junior phase in April 2009. Bridgend will be commencing a range of low level therapeutic interventions and counselling services for children at the foundational and junior education phase, as part of a Welsh Assembly government pilot scheme. Evaluating support Services and school provision for children with Additional Learning Needs

The AIS have been working with a Consultant Peter Gray, to consider ways of evaluating how well the service is doing providing support for schools. The AIS are also looking at how schools can be best measured for making good provision.

Two task groups have been set up consisting of secondary and primary SENCo’s and the first meeting took place on the 5th November, 2008.

Specific Learning Difficulties


An early intervention project to help identify children who are ‘at risk’ of developing poor literacy and movement difficulties is commencing this term. Working with Professor Angela Fawcett from Swansea University, BCBC are intending to produce an early identification tool and an intervention package with resources for supporting young children to access early literacy skills.

Delegating MEAG Funding


Following detailed consideration by the Welsh Assembly Government, it has been decided that LEA’s are now required to manage the funding centrally. A meeting with those schools most effected is being arranged to discuss the most appropriate ways forward.
